“The Chinese are spying on us!”: Racialized discourse on cyber espionage
My zine, titled “The Chinese are spying on us!”: Racialized discourse on cyber espionage lies at the intersection of race, technology, and geopolitics to deconstruct the use of techno-orientalist language in Sinophobic narratives that often govern Western news reporting of China’s data collection practices. By acting as a critical discourse analysis of news media, this zine intervenes in the racialized narratives of technology and China’s alleged cyber espionage activities in the United States (US) to ask: How do China’s recent cyber espionage incidents shape perceptions of China/Chinese individuals in the US? What are the implications of these narratives on diasporic Chinese-Americans/Chinese people in the US?
