Creating Small and Ugly Open Educational Resource (OER)
Are you interested in sharing your educational materials for students and instructors to use and learn from? This workshop will focus on taking the content you’ve already created and turning it into an open educational resource (OER), without a lot of time or effort. We’ll discuss strategies for publishing and sharing educational content such as lecture notes, slide decks, assessments, or multimedia. We’ll find simple ways to openly share educational resources so that others can access, share, and adapt them. We’ll focus on expanding access to educational materials, with one small, ugly step at a time.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain what is meant by “open educational resources”
- Select an appropriate open license for a resource they might share
- Identify online repositories where they might share an OER that they create
This session is ideal for instructors, teaching assistants, educational developers, librarians, and anyone interested in sharing educational materials more openly. No prior experience with OER creation or open licensing is required.

Facilitator Bio
Katie (she/her) is a Teaching and Learning Librarian. She works with students in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science to support their learning and research. She leads programs that support the creation and use of open educational resources at McMaster.
