Getting more out of LaTeX: Citations, presentations, and dissertations
Have you already learned how to create a LaTeX document? Do you already know how to write out beautiful mathematical notation using slash codes? How to insert all the images and table you could ever dream of? And you still want to learn how to get more out of LaTeX? Then this workshop is for you! Learn how LaTeX handles citations, from using .bib files and changing citation styles to integrating the Zotero citation manager with Overleaf. We’ll also show you how to create a conference-ready presentation deck without leaving your LaTeX editor. In addition, we’ll explore how to use LaTeX templates for large writing projects such as theses and dissertations.
By the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Use .bib files to display citations in multiple styles in LaTeX documents
- Connect Zotero to Overleaf and add a citation to their document
- Create a slide deck using the Beamer LaTeX plugin
- Understand how to use a LaTeX template for a large writing project like a dissertation or thesis
This session is ideal for students, researchers, and instructors who have prior experience creating and editing basic LaTeX documents and are looking to expand their skills for academic writing, presentations, and long-form projects. Familiarity with LaTeX fundamentals is recommended.

John Fink is the Digital Scholarship Librarian in the Sherman Centre.
Katie (she/her) is a Teaching and Learning Librarian. She works with students in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science to support their learning and research. She leads programs that support the creation and use of open educational resources at McMaster.
