Exploring Statistics Canada Data Resources

Statistics Canada provides access to a rich collection of data resources that support research, teaching, policy development, and evidence-based decision-making. From Census data and national surveys to public use microdata files and geographic datasets, these resources offer valuable insights into Canada’s population, economy, health, and society. Through guided demonstrations, participants will learn how to navigate Statistics Canada’s online platforms, locate relevant datasets, and understand the different types of statistical products available for analysis.

This workshop introduces the core data products and tools offered by Statistics Canada, while also highlighting library-supported resources that expand access to Canadian data. Whether you are beginning a research project, looking for data to support coursework, or seeking reliable Canadian statistics, this session will provide a practical foundation for finding, accessing, and working with Statistics Canada data.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the major data products and resources available through Statistics Canada.
  • Navigate the Statistics Canada website to find Census data, survey data, data tables, and analytical reports.
  • Distinguish between different types of Statistics Canada data products, including aggregate tables, Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs), and geographic data.
  • Search for and retrieve relevant Canadian statistical data for research, teaching, and coursework.
  • Understand the basic structure and documentation of Statistics Canada datasets and metadata.
  • Recognize library-supported resources and services that provide access to Statistics Canada data, such as CHASS, ODESI, and data consultation services.
  • Apply best practices for citing Statistics Canada data sources in academic and research work.

This session is ideal for students, faculty, staff, and researchers who are new to Statistics Canada data resources or looking to strengthen their data discovery skills. No prior experience with Statistics Canada datasets is required.

Facilitator Bio

Vivek Jadon (he/him) provides research support in the use of numeric research data. As part of his role, Vivek is McMaster University’s official representative for Statistics Canada’s Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) program and Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Both of these programs provide researchers with vast archive of research data from various disciplines for high quality research and instruction. Vivek is also involved in building awareness and promoting RDM activities/services at McMaster.
