Basic mapping and analysis using ArcGIS Pro
Interested in learning how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used to explore, visualize, and communicate spatial information? GIS combines geographic data with analytical tools to help researchers identify patterns, answer spatial questions, and create compelling maps. Through hands-on exercises in ArcGIS Pro, participants will gain practical experience working with geographic data and applying core GIS workflows.
ArcGIS Pro is available free of charge to current McMaster University students, staff, and faculty for coursework and research. Whether you are new to GIS or looking to build foundational mapping skills, this workshop will provide a practical introduction to one of the most widely used GIS platforms.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Navigate the ArcGIS Pro user interface and core tools.
- Add and manage geographic datasets within a map project.
- Apply and customize layer symbology to effectively visualize spatial data.
- Perform basic spatial analysis using ArcGIS Pro tools.
- Create and export a map suitable for sharing, presentation, or publication.
This session is ideal for beginners, researchers, and anyone interested in learning how GIS can support research, teaching, and data-driven decision-making. No prior GIS experience is required.
Workshop Preparation
Prep: To follow along, participants will need to bring their own device with ArcGIS Pro installed. Current McMaster students, staff, and faculty can request a license through the ArcGIS Software Request Form mcmaster-ca.libwizard.com/f/arcgis.
